What's Goan on with my name??

My family originally comes from the the village of Cansa, in the town of Tivim, in the taluka (district) of Bardez, in the state of Goa, on the western coast of India. Here is a link where you can find more information on Goa, Konkani (the official state language) and Goan food & culture if you are interested.

I was born in Kuwait and spent the majority of my childhood there, but my family emigrated to Canada via India after Saddam invaded in 1990.

Diogo is derived from the Spanish Tiago. (San Tiago = Santiago = Saint James the Apostle, of Compostela fame). It is the Portuguese equivalent of the Spanish Diego. My paternal grandfather's first name was also Diogo.

Barco means "boat" in Portuguese and Spanish. I would like to think that my ancestors were boat people...perhaps they were fisher folk who lived in quaint little fishing villages on the beach and drew their livelihood from the Arabian Sea. The reality though is that recent generations have always been inland agrarians and have owned and worked in rice paddy fields. I don't know of any relatives who are fisher people.

Brian is the real interesting one. When I was born, my mum wanted to have me baptized as Brian. However, my paternal grandmother (and I am told my father as well...but he denies it) wanted me to be named after my grandfather who had passed away in the previous year. My mother eventually relented, but insisted that Brian be in there somewhere, so they compromised and it became my middle name.
